How to Install a Gate to Your Fence

How to install a gate to your fence

Building the Frame
Setting up a gate is easy if you already have a fence installed. To make your job even easier, you can buy a gate kit at your local hardware store for latches and brackets to attach to the gate. With these, you can begin making the frame of the gate. First, measure the distance between your fence posts and substract the width of your hinges and the latch on either side. Take this measurement as use it for your horizontal rails, like the ones you used to build your fence but only one for the top and one for the bottom. Then, measure the distance between the top and bottom rails of your fence and use it for your verticle rails. Make sure you allow enough space for the thickness of the brackets which will hold your frame together.
Screw in the rails to the brackets to assemble your frame. Then screw in a middle rail to the frame in order to support the pickets you're going to attach.

Attaching the pickets and installation
Before you install the gate, it will be easier to attach the pickets to the frame first. Get the measurement of the top of the rail to the picket and use it to align the pickets on the frame of your gate properly.
After nailing in the pickets, place a block at the bottom of the gate to align it with your fence to the right height. Screw in the hinges and follow the intructions from your gate kit to attach the latch. After that, you're done!
